The short history of Yaa Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV

Before you read the full biography of this man (Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV) you must have been strong-hearted and peace-loving. We sometimes do not want to narrate the history of this man to a generation if that generation will be vengeful. We will only narrate his life story to lovers of peace and lovers of unity of Dagbon. Let us share with you some nuggets of historical accounts of this man (Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV).

1. "One day we were sitting with Naa Mahamadu IV in early 1970 when some sympathisers of the Naa voiced out something. They wanted to advise Naa to accept to exhume the body of Naa Andani from the royal mausoleum (Katini). Naa Andani who ruled Dagbon for 90 days after Naa Abdulai Gmarigon (father of Naa Mahamadu IV) was father of Naa Yakubu. To those sympathisers, Naa Andani was not selected by the kingmakers but by then government.

Naa Mahamadu IV's face changed from smile to anger. Then he passed his final judgement: 'if you will exhume the body of my late father (Naa Andani) from the katini, then I will also denounce my being your king. I will remove my royal regalia and don't blame me for the bad things that will happen to Dagbon because of this taboo you are asking for.' It died there." As narrated by an elder of the late king (Name withheld).

2. "On the faithful day of 23rd April, 1974 Dagbon was greeted with the greatest taboo of our land; deskinment. News had gotten round that Yaa Naa Mahamadu IV had been removed from the Yani Namship; against our customs, by an executive fiat of the Acheampong administration.

Upon Naa Mahamadu's arrival in Yendi, subsequent to his so-called removal, an act so totally inconsistent with Dagbon customs and traditions, he was met by multitudes of his sympathizers. The looks on the faces of his admirers and sympathizers told it all. Some were gritting with pains, seething with anger and clamouring for revenge. Amidst this tensed atmosphere
